how to be an artist

Do you want to be an artist?

I was going to share an update on roses but this story is just too good! For the past few days, I’ve been drawing birds are living organisms illustrations. I sketched birds and nests with a pencil. I added colors with crayons. I didn’t even use an eraser. Not once. Today a student said,” You draw so well! Are you an artist? “I just draw a lot,” I said. He said,” I want to be an artist when I grow up. Do you want to be an artist when you grow up? I quietly said,” I am an artist. The student said,” Wait a minute. If you’re an artist then why are you a teacher?

Teaching gives me purpose but art and I, we just are. I am an artist. Oh and the Oh the Places We’ll Go made me question my actions too! Is the world telling me that I can do this? I can do this! I am an artist!

Make sure you subscribe if you haven’t. I’ll be posting weekly artist tips and updates on my latest project. See you Sunday with some roses and fun!

Roses-Spirit of Love Bouquet

pink and oragne roses in a blue mug vase

…but in fact, today it is the amateur–the enthusiast who pursues her work in the spirit of love..

Yes, that’s me! The words of Show Your Work go on to say that amateurs aren’t afraid to make mistakes and don’t think about looking ridiculous because they are in love with their work. I’m obsessed. I’m an artist! Art is what I do! I’ve never painted roses before. I paint expressive and abstract wildflowers.

Yet here I am painting roses and building content for the roses book. The roses book will be a friendship book for the spirit, the soul–my spirit, and my soul. What if I share my heart and people shatter it. Can they really? No.

I want to paint the way roses make me feel when I’m out for my walk. I see white roses and that purity and innocence captivate me. I imagine and wonder. It’s beautiful. When I create I don’t care about what others think. It’s not even on my radar. As I painted Spirit of Love I made mistakes. I kept painting. And I’ll keep painting.

Let today’s post be about painting with the spirit of love. Far too often, we define ourselves by outside forces instead of relying on intrinsic value. The passion, the voice is here, always has been.

Thank you so much for reading. Please subscribe and share this with your friends.

Alma Libre-Paper Collage Art

Colorful letters spelling Alma Libre on a blue background

Alma Libre means free soul in Spanish. Quiero Ser is one of my favorite songs. In English, it means I want to be. The song is about being a free soul, a soul that falls in love. Amaya’s words make me dance and sing too:”Quiero ser, una palabra serena y clara
Quiero ser, un alma libre, de madrugada. Oh, and my favorite book is about teachings to free the creative spirit. With every breath, I exhale and inhale serenity, and clarity and wander among the midnight city lights. I paint colorful art for the spirit.

And what better time than Hispanic Heritage to say I don’t need a holiday or month because loving you and doing what you do is mas que a month. Mas Que A Month is Target’s theme. I’ve been reading and seeing that colorful clothes and home decor are in. That’s great but why wait for a trend to tell us that it’s ok to be colorful. This year my theme was about making art. No matter what I think or feel about my work, make art anyway. What I think and feel isn’t really what I think and feel. The doubt, the what if’s that’s not us. The truth is in the big spirits who pick up the paintbrush, splatter, and mix every color on the palette to see what happens.

Let this colorful Alma Libre be about taking care of you. Taking that dance, allowing yourself the chance. Here’s to the wonderful gift of nature. Here’s to making art that’s brighter and bolder. Here’s to your art.

This week I’ll be working on painting trees, painting roses, and gaining clarity with what I really want to say with my art. It feels like I’m wrapping the year up and I am. I know there are changes to be made. I’ve been looking at Wix and reviewing my business skills.

As always thank you for reading. Be a subscriber if you haven’t. Share this with your friends if you believe they’ll enjoy it. I’m excited for what’s to come.
