Woven Hearts

This weekend I painted patterns and woven hearts. Did I make a paper ornament in grade school? Probably. I set out to paint a few and the first one was all wrong. I keep saying this. The second, what a color! Not the bright fun cherry red I wanted… but yeah. I have drawn many hearts for Valentine’s Day. Why did these go wrong? I paint best when all is quiet. I focus. I play. Besides there’s all kinds of woven hearts. I got back into make mode. All of a sudden the first try is looking good. Completely understand why other artists stay up late or wake up early and head to thier creative space.

Sometimes Ideas Work

Sometimes the first one is the ONE. Many times it is. Yesterday I drew my inspiration from two sources: the poster project from a graphic design class and Corita Kent. Except for font changes and layout adjustments, my poster was good. I had an idea. Let it flow into the next. Happy.

Sometimes the source of inspiration shuts down the creative free spirit. My focus becomes how can I make this look like a source. A record should look like a record. A poster should look like a poster. It becomes a guessing game.

That’s where this little book comes in. Begin with am image, painting, or photograph. Fiil the first page with words from your recent grocery list. Keep Going. Go where the inspiration takes you. Observe connections and create the next page. End with some poetic words. Remember there is only make.

Yes, taken from Corita’s book. I’d say that’s great practice!

Potatoes, tomato, onion, beans, chips, ground beef, turkey, buns, hot dogs, buns

What’s good for you? Turkey or Beef?

Color tells such a story

Today I had to test out this new tube of acrylic paint. Oh the pinks, yellows and oranges I could create-perfect for the around the world little project I had in mind. Who new mixing up a little red with this pink would create such a beautiful peach. Mixing color is a great way to learn about the element of color.

Around the world is another fun project. I need a few in between projects while publishing books. Learning about art has enhanced my appreciation for culture around the world. The colors excite me so. I love color!

Right now there’s sketching for Road Trip to be done. Then it’s Ellie. Yup, I need to repaint the book and the cute characters too. Wait, I need to work on the collage art too. I’ll put that on hold.

Tonight I need to get the paperwork started for the Live Your Story paperback. And finish the sketches for Road Trip. The illustration method will come to me.

First book layout is done!

It’s been crazy, my eyes are tired but I think I’m done with the lettering.

I finished the layout earlier and somehow it didn’t save. I kept making all these mistakes. I needed to change the book size because the images didn’t look right. Back and forth and back and forth and now I’m done. Now it’s time to relax and refresh my eyes for the next phase of editing.

Good night universe.

Creative Brainstorm

I just want to have fun with this book. I’m still working on my summer plan. All the details are almost in place.

I sat and doodled away at some lines, patterns, and textures. Ok at first I referenced some Instagram faves. Then I just kept creating.

It’s like writing. It’s always good to just write and write even if it’s garbage. Eventually you’ll arrive at an awesome idea.

I’m coming up with ideas for my letters and gathering my thoughts.

It’s been a good day!

Thinking map for Live Your Story

Rewind. I have a way better idea for this book. I’ll use color and fun hand lettered pages to tell my story. I’ve added a few words so the poem will change.

I’m so excited for this poem. It’s a great way to kick off my summer and it’ll be completed just in time for back to school.

I need this poem. I need this book. The world needs it too. It’s a win-win.
