After scanning and sketching I arrived at this pattern.
This is just the beginning. Cat Coq has a great tutorial and there’s a few of them on You tube as well. There is a simple techique to creating seamless patterns but all you need is practice. You keep creating, letting your eyes tell the story. Eventually your color and layout will get better.
Oh yeah. This is one of those times where you get curious. Then curiosity leads you to an idea that was lingering but you didn’t know how to express it. Hot pink and an emerald green would have been beautiful. Oh I should create a pattern. Done. Right now there’s another pattern I need to digitize.
Tomorrow I will be working on the writing for 100 Ways to Flower With Power.
I have been wanting to lay out all of the paintings and sketches. To observe them and how they make me feel. I should lay them out across the floor and make a video. The flowers that wow me still do. They always will. The flowers that I was unsure of are still in question. Then there’s the new ideas. You should have done this. Wouldn’t it have been better to have a lighter pink. Or this technique with that technique. All the above. The doubt never goes away. You learn to work through it, inspite of it and because of it.
The beauty of 100 Ways To Flower With Power is that you can work on you, this allows you to just make art and that leads to play. Play is where magic happens. Wait a minute, I was writing on the topic of you for the book and I sat there writing and writing and I couldn’t write. Guess it was good to go for a walk. Or I just had to write. Okay back to the book
Have you ever layed out all of your sketches, drawings or paintings?
Yes that is all you need. That one little seed is the voice within. You know you can. Forget about the rules and paint brush. Make a mess. Clean up afterward. With a little leftover paint and a lot of curiosity I spread the paint with my index finger. I know the shapes of petals and just painted.
Surface Design seems like a good idea! These flowers were created with a series of motions made with a flat brush. Not even sure how I mixed this beautiful color. A little red? Oh right it was just painting and that led to PLAY
The just painting and PLAY is part of the 100 ways to flower with power book. It’s all together only I need to physically do it. I have more writing and I’ll start next week.
Ok I’m realizing that the more I explore worldly color and textiles, the more possibilities exist for me to share my work. The orange has a hint of yellow ochre but beautiful for a student grade paint. I’ve been seeing these abstaract tutorials on pinterest. You paint shapes and then use pens to build flowers or fish.
At least that’s what I’ve been painitng. Along the way I keep reminding myself of two important rules. There’s only make. Who says it has to be perfect? Anthroologie’s watercolor shopping bags and store decor remind me of play. On the bag there’s this watercolor design that is free flowing and beautiful. I want more of this in my work. I want all of my work to be this way. I also used dots and circles, random ones. Next time I’ll use the back of a sumi brush.
Here’s to lots more art and fun. The remainder of this year is all about creative exploration.
