Artist Tips of the Year

Practice for Flow Not Perfection

Blue Flowers in a Blue Vase

Practice isn’t about getting good or great. Practice is about letting go. At some point, there’s this voice and you realize it’s there, always has been. I have sat and sat for hours trying to paint something. Nothing happened. On this occasion, I had one color, one damaged brush, and five minutes.

Paper Collage is a Great Way to Learn About Color

Collage pink flowers and lettering the words free soul in Spanish

I’m putting together a creative exploration course with a paper collage. Sometimes I go into the process knowing that I’ll be creating flowers but it’s nice to just use random tools to stamp and blend colors. Then I’ll get an idea and start cutting and arranging. The idea blooms right before my eyes. That’s what happened with the letters M and L.

Social Media needs my attention and consistency

Various papers painted with vibrant orange and pink tones

I like to experiment and paint. I occasionally post on Pinterest. When I do the results are awesome. At one point I had 80k monthly views. I had no plan but to share my work. It worked. I am still learning about SEO. I have ideas. Here’s to more traffic.

Focus on the Moment

I know I’m the artist and I get attached to my work but I shouldn’t. I should only be that spiritual connection that comes as I create. I’m not the end result of my work. Nor am I entitled to the fruits of my labor. My best ideas come when I focus on the moment. For example, I many times have the opportunity to paint with my students. I set up the paint and brushes and wonder what will come of the dried-up dollar store palettes and beyond-bent shapeless brushes. These thoughts have nothing to do with me, my spirit. What is me is curiosity? I’m always curious about what everyone will paint? And every time before my eyes, the children mix up interesting colors, and awesome textures and they are artists. No one gives them permission. They just pick up the brush and go for it.

Road Trip Book

I went to McDonald’s yesterday and this book caught my eye.

Of course I had to bring it home. I’m thinking about my road trip book. Seems like the idea and excitement are slipping away. Makes me think of Elizabeth Gilbert’s, Big Magic. I sat down and read all the notes I had thus far. I realized the excitement wasn’t there…not like it used to be. Not sure what to do, I started sketching ideas.

I like these letters? I’m liking the ink pen no color. This is big for me. I love color! The excitement began building and questions kept coming.

Handwriting or print? I could do a bunch of these block letters?

Wow, I spelled across wrong but notes are for ideas.

Maybe tomorrow I’ll sit down when the house is quiet and go through this book, my notes, let my mind wander, doodle, let creativity take over and write this whole book out once and for all! My excitement is back! Tomorrow’s going to be awesome!

hills of trees ( Day 3 )

Taking your time when painting is a good way to gather your thoughts. I’ve been contemplating the direction of my art.

I had all these ideas … pages of ideas to market and promote my site and books. I had this big agenda, trying to pencil it all in. Yes I have lots of time to create but what’s the effective approach?

All I know is that taking my time allows me to enjoy the process. I love these trees and have more ideas for textures and page layouts. I can use road trip to help me create themes for pages.

Wait a minute, perhaps I should start a pinterest board on awesome textures? These are some of the textures my Lee friends made.

There was no plans. We painted textures on heart shaped leaves. They turned out beautifully. I insisted on tones of green but they knew better.

I’ll keep painting textures. Oh I have a fun way to work on my drawing. I’m building an around the world pinterest board and could draw architecture and art.

Let me go work on the pinterest board.

Many Ways to Paint Trees

Today I sat making notes for Road Trip. I haven’t been too motivated to start. Maybe because I’m still planning. I’ve taken notes and have ideas. I should do a thinking map.

What I did and feel great about is the thinking map for the holiday collection collaboration.

Instantly the Oh Christmas Tree song became the theme.

Various trees in all shapes, sizes and tones of blue. Christmas Trees stand tall beautiful and strong in both winter and summer.

I also feel the need to combine what I love about Valentine’s Day and Christmas. Maybe. A heart shaped tree seems like a good idea.

I’ve been exploring and today I read this post about sporadic watercolor painting. I’m going to do one more page of trees. There are no mistakes. I’ve got to enjoy the process. I just read a post with the words,” The wrong way leads to the right way.” I don’t know the exact words but I’ll keep exloring.

Here’s to awesome ideas. It’s almost time to give Live Your Story a third review . My tribe is growing and people are excited for the book.
